Dramaturgo y actor estadounidense. Trabajó como actor y músico de rock antes de dedicarse a la dramaturgia. Sus primeras obras experimentales y de un acto fueron representadas en el circuito Off-Broadway en la década de 1960, y obtuvieron varios premios Obie. Algunas de sus exitosas obras de mayor desarrollo que se destacaron por sus frecuentes imágenes surrealistas arrancadas del oeste estadounidense, y temas de ciencia ficción y la cultura pop son The Tooth of Crime (1972), La maldición de la clase hambrienta (1976), Niños enterrados (1979, premio Pulitzer), El verdadero oeste (1980), Loco de amor (1983; película, 1985) y Círculo de engaños (1996). También escribió el guión de Paris, Texas (1984) y actuó en numerosas películas, como Días del cielo (1978) Elegidos para la gloria (1983), Loco de amor (1985), Magnolias de acero (1989), El despertar de un ángel (1991), El informe pelícano (1995), El juramento (2001) y El diario de Noa (2004), entre otras.
